Weaning Recipes: Vegetable Khichdi for Babies

Vegetable khichdi is one way to add more flavours to your baby’s meal. It’s loaded with nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and dietary fibres.

While it’s good to begin with a single vegetable or fruit, you can introduce more flavors and textures to your baby once she develops a taste and start liking solids. Vegetable khichdi is healthy, delicious, and makes a wholesome food that’s more filling to the baby. This article describes an easy way to make this nutritious vegetable khichdi recipe for babies.

How to make Vegetable Khichdi for Babies?

Ingredients Required
  1. Brown Rice – 1 teaspoon
  2. Yellow Split Moong Dal – 1 teaspoon
  3. Orange Split Masoor Dal – 1 teaspoon
  4. Green Beans – 2-3 pieces
  5. Green Peas (fresh or frozen) – a handful
  6. Carrot – 1/2, medium sized
  7. Potato – 1, small sized
  8. Tomato – 1, medium sized
  9. Garlic – 1 clove
  10. Turmeric – 1 pinch
  11. Cumin Powder – 1 pinch
  12. Salt – 1 pinch
  13. Ghee – 1 teaspoon
  14. Water – 1 1/2 cup
Equipment Required
  1. Pressure Cooker
  2. Blender
  3. Vegetable Peeler
  4. Knife

Method for Preparation

  1. Thoroughly wash the rice, moong dal and masoor dal under running tap water; preferably 3-4 times.
  2. Soak them in bowl and keep aside for 15 minutes.
  3. Thoroughly wash all the vegetables under running tap water.
  4. Remove the outer skin of the tomato, de-seed it, and cut it into small pieces.
  5. Peel potato and carrot. Cut them into small pieces.
  6. Remove the ends of the green beans and cut them into small pieces.
  7. Finely chop the garlic clove.
  8. Heat ghee in the pressure cooker.
  9. Add chopped garlic. Let it cook until it turns aromatic.
  10. Add turmeric and cumin powder.
  11. Add vegetables (potato, beans, peas, carrot). Stir for 1-2 minutes.
  12. Add chopped tomatoes.
  13. Add salt. Let it cook for a while.
  14. Add rice and dals. Mix everything well.
  15. Add water.
  16. Close the lid of the pressure cooker and let it cook for 6-7 whistles.
  17. Switch off the gas stove and allow the pressure to release completely.
  18. Remove the khichdi from the pressure cooker and allow it to cool down.
  19. Put the khichdi into the blender and blend into a fine paste. Serve fresh.

Additional Notes

  1. You can use white rice instead of brown rice. However, brown rice have additional nutrients. They take time to digest and keeps the baby fuller for longer.
  2. You can make this khichdi without adding vegetables. Adding vegetables make the khichdi more delicious and healthy.
  3. You can use any light and seasonal vegetables that are available fresh to you.
  4. Overcooking makes the khichdi more soft and easy to swallow.
  5. The khichdi needs to have a thin consistency. Adjust the amount of water to get the required consistency.
