Weaning Recipes: Tomato Puree for Babies

Sangeeta Ghera July 21, 2020

Many parents struggle to manage time to cook meals for their babies when they start introducing solids to them. Even some single-ingredient recipes take time to cook. Beetroot for example, takes about 30-40 minutes to steam properly. Tomato Puree is a time-saving baby food recipe that can be prepared within a few minutes without much effort.

Tomatoes are a storehouse of essential nutrients. They are rich in vitamins (Vitamin A, Vitamin C), minerals, and antioxidants. They offer a wide range of health benefits to the baby, such as strengthening the immune system, building strong bones, and developing a stronger vision.

How to make Tomato Puree for Babies?

Following section guides you through the step by step preparation of tomato puree for babies. Let’s get started.

Ingredients Required
  1. Fresh Tomato – 1 Piece (medium sized)
  2. Water – for boiling
Equipment Required
  1. Saucepan
  2. Sieve
  3. Spoon
Method for Preparation
  1. Thoroughly wash the tomato under running tap water.
  2. Place the tomato in the saucepan.
  3. Fill the saucepan with water, covering the tomato by an inch.
  4. Place the saucepan on high flame.
  5. Bring the water to boil (keeping the saucepan uncovered).
  6. Turn the flame down low and allow the tomato to cook for next 5-10 minutes or until you see a crack in the tomato peel.
  7. Turn off the flame and remove the tomato from the saucepan.
  8. Put the tomato in the sieve.
  9. Using the spoon, apply pressure on the tomato to strain its juice. The pulp should also come along with the juice.
  10. Serve tomato puree fresh to the baby.

Additional Notes

  1. Tomatoes are highly acidic. Though cooking reduces the acidity of tomatoes, it’s still not recommended to introduce tomatoes to babies until they turn at least 8 months old to avoid any possibilities of allergic reactions.
  2. Since tomatoes are acidic, care should be taken while choosing the cookware for tomatoes. Metals such as aluminium and copper can leach into the food and cause potential health risks. Stainless steel and well-seasoned cast iron saucepans are generally safe to use.

Final Take

Tomato puree for babies is one super-quick homemade baby food recipe. Although it shouldn’t cause any allergic reactions if the tomato has been cooked properly, inform your pediatrician immediately if you notice any rashes on your baby’s skin.
