Book reading is a wonderful activity to engage children of any age – even the teeny tiny newborns. When you read a book to your baby, she listens to your voice and looks at your expressions. This triggers her brain development and improves her learning and language skills right from the beginning. On top of everything, it helps develop a strong emotional connection between you and your baby.
I, as a mother, wanted to engage my 5 months old into something meaningful. So i bought him his first ever book: Baby Touch – Hello Baby!
Baby Touch – Hello Baby! is a ‘Touch and Feel’ board book from the popular Ladybird Baby Touch series. Here’s my take on the Baby Touch – Hello Baby! book.
About Baby Touch – Hello Baby! Book
Baby Touch – Hello Baby! is a medium-sized children book having 12 pages in total, including the cover. The pages on the left display pictures of mummy/ daddy animals – faces only. And the pages on the right display pictures of baby animals. A certain kind of fabric is attached to each baby animal, which your baby can touch, feel and enjoy. There’s also a mirror-like thing at the end which allows the baby to look at her own reflection.
What’s good about Baby Touch – Hello Baby! Book?
- Book has rounded edges – no sharp edge to hurt the baby.
- Each page has a definite thickness – no worries of pages getting torn.
- Pages are covered with a thin cellophane material – easy to clean.
- Size is good – not too small, not too big.
- Print quality is good.
- Simple pictures on solid background.
- Use of attractive bright colours.
- Introduction to animals and their sounds.
- Reading in question-answer form makes the activity interactive.
- Each fabric introduces the baby to a different texture: fluffy, soft, etc.
- Moderately priced – available at £4.99.
What’s bad about Baby Touch – Hello Baby! Book?
- The Mirror. The mirror at the last is a complete ‘no-no’. It shows distorted image. If the baby tries to look into the mirror, her face would stretch from all ends, just like the focus zoom effect.
- The fabric is covering a smaller area. Could have been better if it covered a larger area.
What’s my experience with Baby Touch – Hello Baby! Book?
As soon as I received the book, I went through all the pages. The page with the mirror was a big disappointment. When I showed it to my baby, he started staring at the pictures and trying to catch the book. For him, the ‘touch and feel’ part didn’t work. He does listened to the book reading, but was more interesting in taking the book into his mouth. So I made a return.
Final Take
Choosing the right book for the right age is important. For my 5 months old who just love to grab and chew everything, this book was not an ideal selection. So I decided to look for other options and switched to a cloth book. This doesn’t mean I don’t recommend this book. If you can adjust with the mirror part and use of small fabrics is not an issue for you, you should definitely give it a try.
