Best Summer Fruits to Keep You Hydrated & Cool

Fruits are a very good source of water. They come with a dual benefit of providing hydration and nutrition to the body.

Summer is the season of hot and humid weather. Excessive heat leads to dehydration which results in fatigue, headache, and other health issues. Doctors generally recommend drinking several glasses of water to stay well-hydrated. Though its important to drink a lot of water, it is equally important to eat food, which is high in water content.

There are certain fruits that can be really helpful to top up your water levels. This post talks about 7 such water-rich summer fruits. Have a look.

#1: Watermelon – Water Content 92%

Topping the list, watermelon contains a whopping 92% water content. It is one of the best summer fruits to have to stay hydrated and cool. Watermelon contains natural sugars, healthy carbs, and dietary fiber. It helps manage weight, prevents constipation, and aids digestion.

Watermelon is also a good source of Vitamin A, C, and Potassium. It contains lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent stroke, high BP, asthma, and cancer.

#2: Strawberries – Water Content 91%

Just like watermelon, strawberries have rich water content which is nearly 91%. They contain antioxidants that help fight free radicals in the body. They are high in fiber and low in calories.

Strawberries are an excellent source of Vitamin C, Folate (Vitamin B-9) and Manganese. They are good for skin and have anti-aging properties. They also helps in maintaining a healthy vision.

#3: Grapefruit – Water Content 91%

Grapefruits are available round the year, but best ones are found between November and May. They contains 91% water content which makes them one of the best hydrating fruits to have in summers.

Grapefruit is highly nutritious. It is an excellent source of Vitamin C and antioxidants. It helps build up a strong immune system and promotes healthy digestion.

Apart from this, Grapefruit contains phytonutrients, including carotenoids and flavonoids. Carotenoids play an important role in maintaining eye health, skin health and bone health. Flavonoids lower the risk of many types of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

#4: Cantaloupe – Water Content 90%

Cantaloupe, also known as muskmelon, is another summer fruit that contains a significant amount of water (90%). It is low in calories and high in fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Folate, and Potassium.

Cantaloupes are very good for skin and eye health. They contain lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids (antioxidants) that reduce the risk of macular degeneration – an eye disease that causes loss of vision. Cantaloupe’s antioxidant properties also help in fighting free radicals that causes oxidative stress to human body.

#5: Peach – Water Content 89%

Peaches are in-season in summers. About 89% of their weight is water. They provide a significant amount of Vitamin C, which is linked with good skin health and a reduced risk of cancer.

Peaches contain fiber, which contributes in managing constipation and promotes a healthy gut.

They also contain Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene. Beta-Carotene is a precursor that turns into Vitamin A inside the body. Vitamin A is supports cell development, immune function, and a healthy vision.

#6: Papaya – Water Content 88%

Papaya contains up to 88% water content. It is an excellent fruit for people dealing with stomach issues, such as constipation, bloating, and irregular bowel movement.

Papaya contains papain – an enzyme that breaks down protein and makes it easier to digest. It also contains a considerable amount of fiber that cleanses the gut and helps relieve constipation.

Apart from this, the presence of Vitamin C and lycopene (a carotenoid) in papaya are believed to improve heart health and lower the risk of heart disease.

#7: Pineapple – Water Content 87%

Pineapple is another summer fruit that’s loaded with nutrients. About 87% of Pineapple’s weight comes from its water content. It is low in calories and high in Vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants.

Pineapple contains bromelain – a digestive enzyme that breaks down protein and helps ease digestion. It also helps in reducing pain, swelling, and discomfort after a surgery or an injury.

While there’s nothing that can beat a glass of plain water, we should always try to eat food rich in water. Not only these incredibly delicious summer fruits help us stay hydrated, but also fight diseases and keep us healthy.
