Not all mosquitoes are dangerous. But some carry serious illnesses such as dengue and chikungunya.
Parents often worry about how to protect their babies from mosquito bites. Especially during summer and rainy seasons, when there’s a significant increase in the number of mosquitoes.
Babies are at greater risk when bitten by mosquitoes as they have a very weak immune system. Although we cannot stop mosquitoes from biting, we can definitely prevent them from reaching our little ones.
This article lists 7 tips to prevent mosquito bites in babies. Have a look.
#1: Prevent mosquitoes from breeding in and around your house
Keep the grass, plants and hedge well-trimmed. Change the water in birdbaths on daily basis. Empty the wading pool when not in use. Clean clogged gutters/ drains. Do not allow water to stagnate anywhere. Empty anything that holds stagnant water.
#2: Use door, window screens
Using doors and window screens is an excellent way to stop mosquitoes and other insects from entering your house. The mesh in the screen keeps the mosquitoes away while allowing fresh air to pass through.
#3: Use mosquito nets
Using mosquito nets is the easiest way to keep your little one protected from mosquitoes. If your baby sleeps in cot, use a cot net. If your baby sleeps with you, use a baby mosquito net. Use a bigger net (that covers the entire bed) to reduce baby’s exposure to mosquitoes during feeding or nappy changing sessions.
Did You Know?
Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Creating a thin coating of oil (any natural oil) on top of water suffocates the larvae and prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
#4: Use mosquito repellents
When your baby turns older than 2 months, you can stick mosquito repellent patches – preferably natural – on her cloths or cot. Avoid applying any mosquito repellent cream or lotion directly on the baby’s sensitive skin.
#5: Keep your baby covered
Dress your baby in clothes that cover her arms and legs. Preferably loose-fitted, so that mosquitoes cannot reach her skin. Pick breathable fabrics such as cotton or light knits.
#6: Choose light colours
Mosquitoes are less-attracted towards light colours. Also, it’s easier to spot them on light colours and kill them before they bite your baby.
#7: Avoid using products with strong scents/ fragrances
Some fragrances and scents can easily attract mosquitoes. Avoid buying products that have strong scents or fragrances. Read the label to make sure the product is unscented or lightly-scented .
Final Take
The above measures help prevent mosquito bites in babies, but they can’t entirely keep mosquitoes from biting. If your baby is being bitten, try natural ways to treat mosquito bites. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice something serious and unusual. Keep your baby vaccinated against mosquito-borne illnesses, such as malaria.
